ABOUT IYENGAR YOGA
ANNE O'CONNOR, CERTIFIED IYENGAR INSTRUCTOR
ABOUT IYENGAR YOGA With its emphasis on clear instructions, creative sequencing, and careful adaptations for physical and psychological concerns, Iyengar Yoga is lively, fun, and accessible for all bodies. Each class cultivates a sense of calm, vitality, and well-being as students build strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance through the progression of poses. Beginner classes focus on standing poses before advancing to more challenging poses, including backbends and inversions. In Iyengar Yoga, the body itself becomes a “laboratory” allowing the practitioner to develop new responses to old patterns through a deepened connection between body and mind. In effect, yoga harnesses the intelligence of the body to cultivate the wisdom of the spirit. Over time, the practice becomes “meditation in action,” leaving the practitioner refreshed, revitalized, and grounded in themselves. Iyengar Yoga is named after B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014), an innovative teacher who pioneered the modern practice of yoga in the West, rooted in India’s ancient philosophical tradition. The spiritual and philosophical teachings of yoga today remain grounded in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, written some two thousand years ago. As B.K.S. Iyengar wrote, “Yoga is firstly for individual growth, but through the individual, society and community develop.” As a teacher, Anne brings a commitment to practicing Iyengar Yoga for healing and collective liberation; to promoting self-awareness to create a more just, discerning, and compassionate society; and to aligning our values with the ethics of yoga. ABOUT ANNE Anne is a teacher and long-time practitioner of Iyengar Yoga who is eager to share with others the spiritual, emotional, and physical gifts of this rich and ancient tradition. Anne grew up in northern Berkshire County and spent many years working as a translator and editor in Europe and New York City before returning to the area to train as a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. Anne has found yoga practice to be a source of equilibrium and resilience in the face of life’s ups and downs. In her teaching, she aspires to nurture this same profound and transformative experience of yoga for every student she meets.
